About the characters
Simon Glonek |
He is the complex-ridden, introvert son of Edward Glonek, a wealthy estate agent who wants his progeny to take over the business when he retires. But what this father doesn’t know is that on the inside, his son is in turmoil, torn between the entities of Reason, Imagination, Subconscious and Depression, all fighting mercilessly for supremacy. Simon meets Lisa, finds true love and embraces the world… or at least temporarily. |
Gerry Geronimo | The Captain | Mister S
Gerry represents Simon Glonek’s Imagination. He’s a bright yellow rabble-rouser, always ready to break into song and make everyone laugh. But the Captain imprisons Gerry in Simon’s teenage years and he languishes in the Glonek prisons until Nora, Lisa’s Imagination, sets him free in an explosion of love at first sight. He comes to power during the Valentine’s Day Revolution, enjoys a honeymoon period, is slowly worn down and finally falls out of favour, as do all politicians. An agitator, too romantic to be a real leader, Gerry is incapable of compromise. A real lefty! |
Simon’s Reason, a cold and self-satisfied being. From the height of his power, the Captain’s sworn motto is: stability, rigour & authority and he reigns as a pitiless dictator over Simon’s inner self. Until the day he is deposed by the Valentine’s Day Revolution. Humiliated, he retires from political life to write his memoirs. When the Depressor surges ahead in the polls, Gerry recalls the Captain to form a government of national union but within the newly uninhibited Simon, he never regains his former glory. | The third component of the Pole of Pluralist Psyche, Mister S symbolises Simon’s Subconscious. He is a charming manipulator, cynical, lawless, faithless and does as he pleases. With a very high opinion of himself, he refers to himself with the royal ‘we’, as did Napoleon. ‘Appearing’ to Gerry, who is recovering from a failed assassination attempt on his own life, Mister S takes advantage of the situation to remove him from power. Soon after, Mister S has to make concessions and agree to share the spoils. Regardless, he is still really in charge.
Arnold Depressor | Professor Appelflap | The Committee of Ethics
Depression constantly haunts Simon, personified by Arnold Depressor. In the beginning the Depressor is a sort of big red sticky ball. Over time he takes on a human form, a respectable guise, designed not to frighten voters. He becomes Arnold Depressor, a mixture of Le Pen, Mao, Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, his absolute hero. A total nihilist, Arnold has but one goal – psychological jihad – Simon’s suicide. | The Glonekian Mister Fixit. A scientific authority representing Simon’s body. He considers himself above politics and only wants what’s best for Simon. A renowned inventor, he is the father of the sex-appeal multiplier and the Geronimobile. Although he is notoriously bad-tempered, Appleflap has everybody’s ear, particularly Gerry’s. As for the Captain, he finds the professor insolent and Mister S despises his mathematical practicality. | This is the Cabinet of the Glonekian government. It consists of six all but brain-dead members, each one as doddery and incompetent as the other. The geriatrics’ sole purpose is to maintain their positions by flattering those in power. Whoever that may be. Their two favourite occupations are eating and sleeping.
Lisa Lillywhite | ||||
Lisa is a medical secretary, a shy and pretty young woman who is also under the influence of an internal dictatorship – Reason. She meets Simon on Valentine’s Day and it’s love at first sight. Lisa lets down her guard at last and then confronts her own demons…
Nora | Camilla | The Queen of Clubs
Nora, Lisa’s Imagination, is a flowery being – sweet, tender and romantic but with a mind of her own! After releasing Gerry, Nora sets Lisa’s internal revolution in train, falls victim to an attempt on her life and vanishes. It is not until some time later that she makes her final reappearance. | Lisa’s Reason – a bitter and twisted Mother Superior – she is harsh, catty and envious. Heading up the Carmelite Militia her mandate for Lisa is a safe and uneventful union with Philip – Mr Boring. But the love-at-first- sight experience with Simon will have her rethinking all her plans. | Nora’s evil twin sister, she symbolizes the jealousy which is eating away at Lisa. Abandoned at birth in favour of Nora (for there was room for only one princess in Lisa) the Queen of Clubs has had to scavenge for her very existence. As she reaches adulthood her one ambition is to take revenge on her sister, and then take over. |
